Cheese scones have always been one of my favorite snacks—I was completely obsessed with them even before I went gluten-free. When I gave up gluten, I knew I had to find a way to recreate that same cheesy, comforting goodness. Thankfully, this gluten-free cheese scone recipe checks all the boxes: quick and easy to make, and absolutely delicious.
What I love most is that you don’t need any gluten-free flour blends—just a few simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. The result? Soft, savory scones with golden edges and rich, cheesy flavor.
This recipe is adapted from @ramisingluten—his gluten-free recipes are always amazing and use straightforward, accessible ingredients.
If you give these a try, I’d love to hear how they turn out! Let me know in the comments if you made any fun additions or swaps.
RECIPE
PREP TIME: 30 mins
COOK TIME: 12 mins
SERVINGS: around 30 small scones
INGREDIENTS
- 130 g corn starch
- 50 g rice flour
- 20 g chickpea flour
- 2 g xantham gum
- 2 g salt
- 15 g baking powder
- 50 g unsalted butter cubed
- 50 g heavy whipping cream *
- 25 g milk
- 80 g cheese ** shredded (mix of hard and semi-soft cheeses)
Optional: mix in black pepper, chives, bacon, or green onions. ***
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat the oven to 355 degrees F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add all dry ingredients to a bowl and mix them together.
- Incorporate the butter and mix with your fingers until the mixture becomes “grainy”. Don’t over do it so the butter doesn’t melt too much.
- Add the cream, milk, and the cheese to the buttery mixture. Add any optional ingredients if any (pepper, thyme, etc).
- Stretch the dough with a rolling pin to a thickness of about 1-1.5 inches.
- Shape the scones by cutting them into triangles with a knife or using cookie cutters in whatever shapes you prefer.
- Optional step: you can whisk an egg and paint the top of the pre-cut dough to give them an extra golden touch.
- Place the shapes on the parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
- Remove scones from the oven and allow them to cool before serving.
NOTES
*If you don’t have heavy whipping cream, you can try replacing it with milk. However, add the extra amount carefully so that the dough doesn’t end up being too wet.
**You can add whatever cheeses you like the most. I usually use a blend of Parmesan, Mexican cheese, and mozzarella.
***You can add extra flavor by incorporating some extra ingredients such as black pepper, green onion, chives, bacon, etc.
